Retirement Plan

Naming People For the American Way Foundation (PFAWF) as a beneficiary of your retirement plan is a wonderful way to help and simple to do. Just call your plan administrator (at your employer or the broker or mutual fund’s 800 number if the funds are managed by brokerage or mutual fund company) and tell them that you want to change your retirement plan beneficiary.

You can include PFAWF as the full beneficiary, as a partial beneficiary or as a contingent beneficiary.

Tax Saving Tip

If you are leaving a gift to both a charity and to family at death, always make the charitable gift first from your retirement plan with the family gift from other assets.

Why? A retirement plan gift to a family member means he or she will pay income taxes on the gift. Retirement plan gifts to PFAWF avoid all income taxes. Other assets given to family members will generally escape income taxes. Of course, estate taxes may still be due on gifts to family, but the income tax savings can be substantial.
