Dump DOMA
It's time for some real change we can believe in. It's time for the federal government to stop punishing loving same-sex couples. It's time to repeal DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act). President-elect Obama says he supports the repeal. Take action right now to make sure Congress sends him the legislation.

Confirm Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court
United States Court of Appeals Judge Sonia Sotomayor is Obama's nominee to fill the Supreme Court seat being vacated by Justice David Souter. Obama is using this opportunity to do exactly what he promised in last year's election -- to select a person who has demonstrated a commitment to the core constitutional values of justice and equality under the law and who understands the impact the law has on the lives of everyday Americans. But you can be sure that the Right will do all it can to make a fight over Sotomayor's confirmation. The Senate needs to know that Americans are behind this excellent pick.

Tell the Senate: Confirm Dawn Johnsen as head of the Office of Legal Counsel
The Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) at the Justice Department is incredibly important -- among other things, it's the where the legal rationale for the Bush administration's torture policies was crafted. Dawn Johnsen's nomination to head the OLC is under attack from the Right Wing, but she is the perfect pick to clean up the OLC and help restore justice to the DOJ.

Pass the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act
Help make 2009 the year we'll finally be able to enact hate crimes legislation that includes protections against violence based on disability status, sexual orientation, gender, and gender identity. The Right Wing is working hard to stop the legislation with their usual lies and scare tactics, but the bill was passed in the House on April 29th and will be coming under Senate consideration soon. Help bring this bill to the President's desk!

Torture Accountability: Tell Holder to Appoint a Special Prosecutor to Investigate Bybee, Yoo, and Bradbury
According to initial accounts, the report due to be released by the Justice Department Office of Professional Responsibility will not recommend criminal investigation of the authors of the now infamous "torture memos." But true accountability for illegal acts requires prosecution. Tell Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a special prosecutor to conduct a criminal investigation of Jay Bybee, John Yoo, and Steven Bradbury, the legal architects of the Bush administration's torture policies.

Torture Accountability: Impeach 9th Circuit Judge Jay Bybee
As the Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel under President George W. Bush, Jay Bybee tried to bend the law to justify the administration's torture policies. Had the recently-released Bush-era torture memos been disclosed when Jay Bybee was nominated by the former president for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, he probably would not have been confirmed by the Senate. We agree with the New York Times: "Mr. Bybee is unfit for a job that requires legal judgment and a respect for the Constitution. Congress should impeach him."

Tell Congress How to Restore Justice
Justice has been on vacation for eight long years. It needs to be restored. That means restoring checks and balances, accountability, transparency and the rule of law -- some of our most fundamental constitutional values that have been stepped on and undermined by the previous administration. People For has a new Campaign to Restore Justice and a three-point petition to congressional leaders.
